Silica is one of the most important new inorganic materials, especially nano-scale silica due to its small particle size, many micropores, large specific surface area, strong surface adsorption, large surface energy, high chemical purity, good dispersion, thermal resistance, resistance and other aspects of the specific performance, with its superior stability, reinforcement, thickening and thixotropy. It is widely used in many disciplines and fields.


Applications of silica

I). Application in rubber industry

Rubber is an elastomer with excellent scalability, but its comprehensive performance is not satisfactory. In the process of producing rubber products, carbon black is usually added to the rubber material to improve the strength, wear resistance and aging resistance. However, due to the addition of carbon black, the products are black, and the grade is not high. The appearance of silica in China has laid a material foundation for producing a new generation of rubber products with novel color and excellent performance. After adding a small amount of silica to ordinary rubber, the strength, wear resistance and anti-aging properties of the product reach or exceed that of high-grade rubber products, and can keep the color unchanged for a long time.


II). Application in the field of drug carrier and catalysis

Nano silica is inert and highly adsorbable, so it is often used as a carrier in the preparation of fungicides. When nano silica is used as the carrier, it can adsorb antibacterial ions to achieve the purpose of antibacterial. It can be used in the manufacture of refrigerator shell and computer keyboard. Nano-silica has large surface area, high porosity and many active surface centers, so it has potential application value in catalyst and catalyst carrier. The composite oxides containing nano silica can be prepared by sol-gel technique using nano silica as basic raw material. When the composite oxide is used as catalyst support, it will show unique reaction performance for many structure-sensitive reactions. The catalytic activity of the reaction is high, the selectivity is good, and the catalytic activity can be maintained for a long time.


III). Application of FRP products

Although FRP products have the advantages of light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, but its own hardness is low, wear resistance is poor. Related experts added silica into gelcoat resin by ultrasonic dispersion method, and compared the performance of gelcoat without silica, and found that its Mohs hardness increased from the original 2.2 level (equivalent to the hardness of gypsum) to 2.8~2.9 level (level 3 is the hardness of natural marble), wear resistance increased 1~2 times. Due to the grafting and bonding of nanoparticles and organic polymers, the toughness of the material is increased, so the tensile strength and impact strength are increased by more than 1 times, and the heat resistance is also greatly improved.


IV). Application in food

The silica in food is mainly used in egg powder, milk powder, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, sugar powder, plant fat powder, instant coffee, powder soup and powder essence, as anti-condensation agent. Due to temperature change, humidity increase or pile pressure between packages, food powder is easy to stick together and agglomerate, affecting product quality and storage life. Silica plays an anti-caking role in food, mainly by wrapping food powder particles to separate each particle, keep the powder in the best free flow state, to achieve the purpose of anti-caking. In addition, the silica wrapped around the powder absorbs moisture from the surrounding air in numerous internal pores, preventing the food from becoming damp and clumping during storage.


V). Application in cosmetics

In the past, most of the organic compounds used in sunscreen products are ultraviolet absorbent, but there are problems such as skin cancer and chemical allergy caused by increasing the amount of addition in order to protect the skin from exposure to ultraviolet as much as possible. Silica is an inorganic component, easy to be compatible with other components of cosmetics, non-toxic, tasteless, does not have the above problems, and itself is white. It can be simply colored. What is especially valuable is that silica has strong UV reflection ability and good stability. After being irradiated by ultraviolet light, it does not decompose, do not change color, and will not react with other components in the formula. These outstanding features of silica lay a good foundation for the upgrading of sunscreen cosmetics.


VI). Application in electronic packaging

The three main materials of electronic packaging are substrate material, plastic sealing material, lead frame and solder. Among the plastic sealing materials, epoxy plastic sealing materials (EMC) is the mainstream of integrated circuit packaging at home and abroad. In EMC, silica powder content accounts for 60% ~ 90%. In electronic packaging, the main requirements of integrated circuit packaging after high moisture resistance, low stress, low alpha ray, resistance to immersion welding and reflow welding, plastic sealing process performance is good. For these requirements, epoxy plastic sealing material must be doped with inorganic filler in the resin matrix. The existing inorganic filler is basically silicon powder, which can reduce the thermal expansion coefficient of plastic sealing material, increase the thermal conductivity, reduce the dielectric constant, environmental protection, flame retardant, reduce the internal stress, prevent moisture absorption, increase the strength of plastic sealing material, reduce the cost of packaging material and so on.
