Peruvian copper Mine almost 'fully recovered' from pandemic
Peru's copper mining industry has almost fully recovered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, a government official said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.Peru is the world's second-largest producer of copper.
But Peru's copper output fell 2.2% from a year earlier to 198,796 tons in July as a result of the outbreak, Jaime Galvez, deputy minister of energy and mining, said at a virtual conference.
In mid-March, the Peruvian government ordered a coronavirus quarantine and placed special restrictions on mining activities.The sector, an important economic engine for the Andean country, began slowly returning to normal operations in May.
In early August, the government said copper production in the first half of 2020 was down 20.4 per cent from the same period in 2019.
