Peru's copper mining industry has almost fully recovered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, a government official said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.Peru is the world's second-largest producer of copper.

But Peru's copper output fell 2.2% from a year earlier to 198,796 tons in July as a result of the outbreak, Jaime Galvez, deputy minister of energy and mining, said at a virtual conference.

In mid-March, the Peruvian government ordered a coronavirus quarantine and placed special restrictions on mining activities. The sector, an important economic engine for the Andean country, began slowly returning to normal operations in May.

In early August, the government said copper production in the first half of 2020 was down 20.4 per cent from the same period in 2019.

  Ambiguous subject of responsibility

The lithium-ion battery trend in the e-bike industry may not be reversed.

According to Yu Qingjiao, secretary-general of Zhongguancun New Battery Technology Innovation Alliance, the concentration ratio of the new energy automobile industry is constantly increasing, and the technical requirements are also constantly improving. Many small and medium-sized battery enterprises that have lost the market begin to transform to the small power lithium battery market with low technical threshold.

According to the data from The Lithium Battery Research Institute of GaI, the shipments of small power lithium batteries mainly used in electric bicycles have exceeded 14 GIGAwatt hours in 2019, and the output value has exceeded 10 billion yuan, increasing at a rate of more than 50% for two consecutive years.

However, lithium batteries generally have the problem of violent impact or fire under high temperature conditions, so the heat dissipation and collision protection of lithium batteries are very important. However, due to the product and use characteristics of e-bikes, their batteries are smaller and are often directly exposed to the external environment, which increases the risk of e-bikes accidents.Statistics from the Fire and Rescue Department of the Ministry of Emergency Management show that there are an average of 2,000 e-bike fires nationwide each year, with nearly half of them occurring in the summer.

Why are lithium batteries more likely to cause fires?Zhang Wei, who is engaged in research and development of lithium batteries for automobiles and small power lithium batteries, believes that the stability of lithium itself is not as good as that of lead, so qualified lithium batteries need to be controlled by thermal management and external variables to ensure their safety performance.
