Titanium is a chemical element, chemical symbol Ti, atomic number 22, in the periodic table of chemical elements in the fourth period, IVB group.  It is a silver-white transition metal characterized by light weight, high strength, metallic luster and resistance to wet chlorine corrosion.  The most common compound of titanium is titanium dioxide, which is used to make white pigments.  In the past, titanium ore was mined mainly for titanium dioxide.  


Properties of titanium dioxide powder

Titanium dioxide (chemical formula: TiO₂) is a white national or powdered amphoteric oxide, the molecular weight of 79.83.  


Titanium dioxide is a compound of titanium that is pure (as opposed to elemental) and consists of two or more elements.  Compounds have certain properties that differ from the elements or ions they contain, as well as from other compounds.  


Optical properties: because TiO₂ nano particles can scatter and absorb ultraviolet light, it has a strong ultraviolet shielding.  Often incorporated into textile fibers as a sunscreen, ultrafine titanium dioxide powders are also added to sunscreen creams to make sunscreen cosmetics.  


Physical properties: TiO₂ high melting point, is also used to make refractory glass, glaze, enamel, clay, high temperature resistant experimental utensils, etc.  TiO₂ gloss and high hardness, with the best opacity, the best whiteness and brightness, can be used as white inorganic pigment, enamel extinction agent.  TiO₂ semiconductor performance is very important to the electronics industry, the industrial sector uses these characteristics to produce electronic components such as ceramic capacitors.

Application of titanium dioxide powder in various fields  

As a new multifunctional material in the 21st century, titanium dioxide is widely used in industry, food, environmental protection, medicine and other aspects.  


1. Industrial applications  

Titanium dioxide is an important white pigment and porcelain glaze.  Also can be used in paint, ink, plastic, rubber paper, chemical fiber, watercolor pigment and other industries.  Titanium dioxide is the whitest thing in the world, five times whiter than the commonly used pigment zinc barium white, making it the best pigment for white paint.  Titanium dioxide can be added to paper to make it white and opaque, which is 10 times more effective than other substances. Therefore, titanium dioxide is used in bill paper and art paper.  Titanium dioxide is also sometimes added to lighten the color of plastics and soften the gloss of rayon.  


Titanium dioxide is the main component of electrode surface coating. It is a good slag-making agent, deoxidizer diluent, binder and stabilizer of flux.  It made of electrode slag melting point is low, low viscosity, AC and DC can be used, operation point arc fast, arc stability, slag removal easy, beautiful weld, good mechanical properties.  In addition, ultrafine titanium dioxide has excellent UV shielding and transparency, and is widely used in cosmetics, food packaging plastics, artificial fibers and natural fibers.  


2. Food applications  

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration defines TiO₂ as a white pigment in all foods.  The pigment additive titanium dioxide can be safely used in general colored food, such as cold fruit, jelly, fried food, cocoa products, etc.  


3. Medical applications

TiO₂ can purify air, antibacterial deodorant.  Environmental harmful gas can be divided into indoor harmful gas and air pollution gas.  Indoor harmful gases mainly include formaldehyde released by decorative materials and methanethiol, thiolated hydrogen and ammonia produced in the living environment.  TiO₂ through photocatalysis adsorption on the surface of these substances decomposition oxidation, so as to reduce the concentration of these substances in the air, reduce or eliminate environmental discomfort.
