Preparation and application of titanium carbide based ceramics

Titanium carbide (TiC) is a kind of iron gray crystal with its own metallic luster. It has several characteristics similar to metal: such as high melting point, boiling point and hardness, and hardness is second only to diamond. It also has good thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity, and will show superconductivity at very low temperature.  Therefore, this substance is often used to manufacture cermet, hard alloy, heat-resistant alloy, anti-wear material, high temperature radiation material and other high temperature vacuum devices.

Titanium carbide ceramics as a typical transition metal carbide, itself brittle, can not be directly used as engineering components, so in composite materials is usually used as a reinforcement phase, more is used as a coating in the field of materials has been applied and paid attention to, such as the emergence of titanium carbide ceramics.  

Titanium carbide fund belongs to the ceramic is a kind of of metal or alloy TiC ceramic phase heterogeneous composite material, both ceramics high strength, high hardness, wear resistance, high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance and chemical stability characteristics, as well as metal toughness, can be used to manufacture used in reducing and inert atmosphere of high temperature thermocouple protective sleeve and smelting metal crucible and so on.  

Application of titanium carbide based ceramics

(1) Cutting metal tool: new titanium carbide fund ceramics is a tool material developed rapidly in recent years, high comprehensive performance, in the same cutting conditions, its wear resistance is much higher than ordinary hard alloy.  The wear resistance of YT14 and YT15 cemented carbide is 5 ~8 times higher than that of YT14 and YT15 cemented carbide in high speed cutting.  At present, titanium carbide ceramic has been made into a variety of blades, used for fine boring of holes and "car instead of grinding" and other finishing fields.  

(2) Aerospace industry: TiC/Cu cermets prepared by high temperature sintered skeleton infiltration process have good ablative resistance and have the potential as rocket throat lining and protective plate materials.  

(3) Other: with SHS method centrifugal casting synthesis of metal lining ceramics can be used as corrosion resistant pipeline, used for petroleum or chemical products, semi-product transport, can also be used as anti-wear pipeline for mines, concentrators for pulp transport pipeline, but also can be used for mud sand water pipelines.
