Neodymium oxide: what is it? how does it work?

Neodymium oxide is also known as neodymium trioxide in Chinese. The chemical formula of Neodymium oxide is NdO, and CAS 1313-97-9 is a metal oxide with insoluble water, soluble in acid properties.

Neodymium metal powder preparation

Chemical precipitation is the simplest and most widely used method for preparation of nano-sized neodymium oxide particles in liquid phase. It uses various precipitating agents and raw materials containing neodymium ions to generate insoluble carbonate and oxalate precursor precipitation after precipitation reaction, and then the generated precursor precipitation is filtered, and finally the nano-grade neodymium oxide powder is produced after forging and firing. The most commonly used methods are coprecipitation, homogeneous precipitation, complexation precipitation and so on. 

The precipitation method has the advantages of simple process, easy operation and low requirements on equipment. It is a widely used method to prepare nano-sized neodymium oxide powder materials in laboratory and industry. But at the same time, the precursor particles in the preparation process are easy to agglomerate, resulting in the final preparation of neodymium oxide particles of large particle size, and the post-treatment process is troublesome, there are impurities pollution and other shortcomings.

Neodymium oxide applications

1. Neodymium oxide is an extremely versatile rare earth oxide. It is mainly used in NdFeb (ND-FE-B) permanent magnet, television, glass coloring, fluorescent materials, laser materials and rubber industry additives. Neodymium oxide is elegant in tone and has a good effect on color change. It is also widely used in ceramics, textile dyeing, superconductivity and other high-tech materials, with rapid growth.

Neodymium oxide has gradually expanded its application and research in the field of catalysis, such as the synthesis of carboxylate esters and the amination of fatty alcohols. Nano-sized neodymium oxide has good catalytic activity. As a rare earth nanomaterials, nano-neodymium oxide can be added to magnesium or aluminum alloy, which can improve the strength and corrosion resistance of magnesium or aluminum alloy in high temperature environment. This high-performance material is widely used in aerospace industry. In the medical side, nano-neodymium oxide can be used to make nano-yttrium aluminum oxide garnet laser, which can produce short wave laser, can replace the ordinary scalpel in special occasions, has a good effect.
