Characteristic
Titanium hydride, also known as titanium dihydride, is an insoluble metal hydride formed from titanium and hydrogen. It is commercially available as a stable grey/black powder, which is used as an additive in the production of Alnico sintered magnets, in the sintering of powdered metals, the production of metal foam, the production of powdered titanium metal and in pyrotechnics.
Chemical formula:TiH2−x
Molar mass:49.88 g/mol (TiH2)
Appearance:black powder (commercial form)
Density:3.76 g/cm3 (typical commercial form)
Melting point:350 °C (662 °F; 623 K) approximately
Solubility in water:insoluble
Application
It is used as an getter in the electric vacuum process, as a source of hydrogen in the manufacture of metal foam, as a source of high purity hydrogen, and as a source of titanium for metal-ceramic sealing and powder metallurgy.
Titanium dihydride is brittle, so it can be used to make powdered titanium. It is also used in welding, where the titanium dihydride is decomposed by heat, precipitating new hydrogens and titanium, the latter of which facilitates welding and increases weld strength. It can be used as a catalyst for polymerization.
