Basic properties of cerium oxide powder

Cerium dioxide, also known as cerium oxide, is the oxide of cerium. At this time, the valence of cerium is +4 and the chemical formula is CeO2.  Pure for white heavy powder or cube crystal, not pure for light yellow or even pink to red brown powder (due to contain trace lanthanum, praseodymium, etc.).  Cerium dioxide is a stable oxide of cerium at room temperature and pressure.  Cerium can also form Ce2O3 with +3 valence, which is unstable and will form stable CeO2 with O2.  Cerium oxide is slightly soluble in water, alkali and acid.  Density 7.132g /cm3, melting point 2600℃, boiling point 3500℃.

The hardness of CeO2 particles is not high, as shown in the following table. The hardness of cerium oxide is much lower than that of diamond, alumina, zirconia and silicon oxide, and is comparable to that of ferric oxide.  Therefore, it is not technically feasible to use low hardness cerium oxide to polish silicon oxide based materials, such as silicate glass, quartz glass, etc., only from the mechanical aspect.  But cerium oxide is currently the preferred polishing powder based on silicon oxide or even silicon nitride.  It can be seen that cerium oxide polishing has other functions besides mechanical action.  The hardness of commonly used grinding and polishing materials diamond usually appears oxygen vacancy in CeO2 lattice, which changes its physical and chemical properties and has a certain influence on the polishing performance.  Common cerium oxide polishing powder contains a certain amount of other rare earth oxides, praseodymium oxide (Pr6O11) also has a face-centred cubic lattice structure, which can be used for polishing, while other lanthanide rare earth oxides have no polishing ability, they can form a solid solution with CeO2 in a certain range without changing the crystal structure.  For high purity nano cerium oxide polishing powder (VK-CE01), the higher the purity of cerium oxide (VK-CE01), the greater the polishing ability, the service life is also increased, especially hard glass and quartz optical lenses such as long time cycle polishing, to use high purity cerium oxide polishing powder (VK-CE01) is appropriate.
