Characteristic
Nickel is a chemical element with the atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a transition metal, hard, malleable, ferromagnetic, highly polished and resistant to corrosion.Nickel is an iron-loving element. In the core of the highest content of nickel, is a natural ferro-nickel alloy.
Phase at STP:solid
Appearance:lustrous, metallic, and silver with a gold tinge
Melting point:1728 K (1455 °C, 2651 °F)
Boiling point:3003 K (2730 °C, 4946 °F)
Density (near r.t.):8.908 g/cm3
when liquid (at m.p.):7.81 g/cm3
Heat of fusion:17.48 kJ/mol
Heat of vaporization:379 kJ/mol
Molar heat capacity:26.07 J/(mol·K)
Application
Nickel is often used in electroplating because of its corrosion resistance.Nickel-cadmium batteries contain nickel.
Mainly used in alloys (such as nickel steel and nickel silver) and as catalysts (such as laney nickel, especially as a catalyst for hydrogenation), used to make money, etc., plated on other metals to prevent rust.Mainly used to make stainless steel and other corrosion resistant alloy, such as nickel steel, nickel chromium steel and various non-ferrous metal alloy, containing nickel composition of higher copper nickel alloy, not easy to corrosion. It is also used as a hydrogenation catalyst and for the preparation of ceramic products, special chemicals, electronic circuits, glass stains and nickel compounds.
