Characteristic
An aqueous solution of gallium sulfate can be obtained by reacting gallium metal with sulfuric acid at room temperature or under heating conditions.
Chemical formula:Ga2(SO4)3•xH2O (x≈18)
Formula weight: 427.62 g/mol(anhy)
Appearance: white crystal
Density: 3.86 g/ml
Melting Point: 105-110°
Sensitivity: Hygroscopic. Ambient temperatures.
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water and acid.
Application
Gallium(III) sulfate hydrate is used in the preparation of other gallium compounds such as gallium oxide. It is supported on silica gel act as a solid acid catalyst, which is employed as a heterogeneous catalyst for the esterification of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and heptanol to give n-heptyl p-hydroxybenzoate. On reacting with strong acid cation ion exchange resin, it exhibits excellent catalytic activity, which is used for synthesizing amyl hexanoate.
