Characteristic

Gallium is a chemical element with the atomic number 31. Group 13 of the periodic table is a poor metal with similar properties to aluminum, indium and thallium.Gallium is very soft and malleable. It is bluish gray in solid state and silvery white in liquid state. Gallium melting point at 29.78℃, so placed in the palm of the hand will melt, but gallium boiling point is high.Slightly soluble in mercury, form gallium amalgam.Gallium can infiltrate glass, so it is not suitable to use glass containers for storage.

Application

Industrial uses

Manufacturing semiconductor gallium nitride, gallium arsenide, gallium phosphide, germanium semiconductor dopant element;Pure gallium and low fusion alloy can be used as heat exchange medium for nuclear reaction.Filler for high temperature thermometers;Catalyst for diesterification in organic reaction.

Medical applications

After observing that cancer tissue was attractive to 67Ga, the national cancer society noted that stable gallium was effective in rodent tumors. This has been tested on cancer patients.Gallium is harmful to the kidneys when taken in 750mg/kg doses.Continuous infusion of gallium can reduce the toxicity of gallium to renal tubules.
