Through chemical or physical methods to form a film on the tool surface (that is, coating process), so that the cutting tool to obtain excellent comprehensive cutting performance, so as to meet the requirements of high-speed cutting;  Since the advent of hard coating tools in the early 1970s, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology and physical vapor deposition (PVD) technology have been developed, which has opened a new chapter in the history of improving the performance of tools.  Compared with uncoated cutting tools, coated cutting tools have significant advantages: it can greatly improve the life of cutting tools;  Effectively improve the cutting efficiency;  Improve the machining accuracy and significantly improve the surface quality of the machined workpiece;  Effectively reduce the consumption of cutting tool materials, reduce the processing cost;  Reduce the use of coolant, reduce the cost, conducive to environmental protection.

Commonly used coatings-titanium nitride powder

1. Titanium nitride coating: Titanium nitride (TiN) is a universal PVD coating, can improve tool hardness and has a high oxidation temperature.  The coating can be used in high speed steel cutting tools or forming tools to obtain good machining results.

2. Chromium nitride coating: Good adhesion resistance of CrN coating makes it the preferred coating in the processing of nodules.  With this almost invisible coating, the machinability of HSS or carbide tools and forming tools will be greatly improved.

3. Diamond coating: CVD diamond coating can provide the best performance for non-ferrous metal materials processing tools, is the processing of graphite, metal matrix composites (MMC), high silicon aluminum alloy and many other high abrasive materials ideal coating (note:  Pure diamond-coated tools cannot be used for machining steel because of the large amount of cutting heat generated and the chemical reaction that destroys the adhesion layer between the coating and the tool).

4. Titanium nitride coating: titanium nitride (TiCN) coating added carbon elements can improve tool hardness and obtain better surface lubricity, is the ideal coating of high-speed steel tool.

5. Nitrogen aluminum titanium or nitrogen titanium aluminum coating (TiAlN/AlTiN) : Aluminum oxide layer formed in TiAlN/AlTiN coating can effectively improve the high temperature processing life of the tool.  The coating can be used for hard alloy cutting tools mainly used for dry or semi-dry cutting.  Depending on the ratio of aluminum to titanium in the coating, AlTiN coating provides higher surface hardness than TiAlN coating, making it another viable coating option for high-speed machining.
