October 28 - U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday formally lifted tariffs on primary aluminum imports from Canada, but threatened to reinstate them if imports surge north of the BORDER.

Canada is expected to export only 70,000 to 83,000 tons of primary aluminum a month through December, about half of its monthly exports in January-July, the USTR said.

In his statement, Trump said he could reimpose tariffs on Canadian imports of unalloyed, unwrought aluminum for the rest of 2020 if they exceed estimates for the United States.

Last month, the U.S. Trade Representative's office announced an agreement with Canada to reinstate the section 232 national security tariff of 10 percent on Canadian imports, effective retrofully on Sept. 1.

Trump initially approved exemptions for Canadian aluminum imports in 2019, but a surge in Canadian imports of unalloyed, unwrought aluminum prompted him to reinstate the tariffs in August, adding to tensions with Canada.
