Technical Description of Molybdenum Sulfide


Nano molybdenum disulphide powder was prepared by gas phase method with variable current laser ion beam. The product has high purity, narrow particle size distribution, stable process yield, melting point 1185℃, density 4.80g/cm3 (14℃), Mohs hardness 1.0 ~ 1.5.  Decomposition began at 1370℃ and decomposed into molybdenum and sulfur at 1600℃.  When it is heated in air at 315℃, it begins to be oxidized, and the oxidation reaction speeds up as the temperature increases.  Nanomolybdenum disulfide is insoluble in water, dilute acid and concentrated sulfuric acid, generally insoluble in other acids, bases, organic solvents, but soluble in aqua regia and boiled concentrated sulfuric acid.  Slow oxidation occurs at 400℃ and molybdenum trioxide is formed.  


Application of Molybdenum Sulfide


1, Nano molybdenum disulfide is an important solid lubricant, especially suitable for high temperature and high pressure.  It also has diamagnetic, can be used as a linear photoconductor and display p-type or n-type conductivity of semiconductors, with the role of rectification and energy conversion.  Molybdenum disulfide can also be used as a catalyst for the dehydrogenation of complex hydrocarbons.  


2, Nano molybdenum disulfide is also known as the "king of solid lubricating oil".  The product has the advantages of good dispersity and non-bonding. It can be added in all kinds of grease to form a non-bonding colloidal state and increase the lubricity and extreme pressure of grease.  Also suitable for high temperature, high pressure, high speed and high load of mechanical working state, prolong the life of equipment.  


3. The main function of nano molybdenum disulfide for friction materials is to reduce friction at low temperature, increase friction at high temperature, small loss of combustion, volatile in friction materials.  

Friction reduction: the particle size of molybdenum disulfide produced by supersonic airflow grinding reaches 1250-12000 mesh, the hardness of micro particles is 1-1.5, and the friction coefficient is 0.05-0.1, so it can play a role in friction reduction.  

Increasing friction: Molybdenum disulfide does not conduct electricity, and there are copolymers of molybdenum disulfide, molybdenum trioxide and molybdenum trisulfide.  When the temperature of the friction material increases sharply due to friction, the molybdenum trioxide particles in the copolymer expand with increasing temperature, which increases the friction.  

Anti-oxidation: Molybdenum disulfide is obtained through chemical purification and comprehensive reaction, its PH value is 7-8, slightly alkaline.  It covers the surface of friction materials, can protect other materials, prevent them from being oxidized, especially make other materials not easy to fall off, adhesion enhancement;  


4, Nanometer molybdenum disulfide can also become a new material for making transistors.  Molybdenum disulfide has a band gap of 1.8eV compared to graphene, which is also a two-dimensional material, while graphene has no band gap. Therefore, molybdenum disulfide may have a wide application space in the field of nanotransistors.  Moreover, the electron mobility of the single-layer MoS2 transistor can reach about 500 cm^2/(V·s), and the current switching rate can reach 1×10^8.
