It forms hygroscopic white monoclinic crystals and also hydroscopic hexahydrate LuCl3•6H2O. Anhydrous lutetium(III) chloride has the YCl3 (AlCl3) layer structure with octahedral lutetium ions

Application

 

Lutetium(III) chloride hexahydrate is used as a catalyst and laboratory reagent. It is also used in ceramics, optical glasses, electrical components and photo-optical material. It is one of the components of scintillating composition. It serves as a precursor for the preparation of other lutetium complexes. It finds application as one of the starting materials for aluminate phosphors.
